Last Comic Standing At Anime Expo 2009
« on: August 15, 2009, 01:19:47 AM »
Click Here to Watch the Last Comic Standing At Anime Expo 2009 Video.

The first Last Comic Standing At Anime Expo was in 2007.  Since then I've become a huge fan.  Although, 2008 was horrible, I still had high hopes for Anime Expo's Last Comic Standing.  The pay off was in 2009.  This year's Last Comic Standing was excellent.  Though not always funny, every comic had their moment.

The variety of comics ranged from dark to hyper and everything in between.  The show was quite long so I didn't have enough battery life to get the whole event.  Unfortunately, I missed some of the best material.  There was an Afro Samurai cosplayer that had a joke stating that Pokemon was like slavery, you probably had to be there.  There was also a tie breaker that ended up being a "Yo Momma" style tie breaker.  There was a comic that stated "Yo momma is such a boring date that I'd rather watch One Piece dubbed.", and if you know anime that's bad.

I Remember G's Yo mama jokes from the battle round with Anton.  They are as follows:

"Yo mama is so fruity she makes the Twilight vampires look manly."

"Yo mama's voice is so annoying I'd rather listen to the 4kids dub of One Piece."

"Yo mama is such an easy date I'd rather see the Dragon Ball movie then date her."

Antons comebacks were lame, he actually got booed. What a shame.

Anime Expo was great I had alot of fun even though I didn't really buy any thing but It was fun But I was only there for 4 days unfortunately but any ways It was a blast The exhibit hall was pretty awesome  and so was the Rest Although Single'd out wasn't that great the Girls weren't hot I would say But other than that it was all good my Partner I attended with was Kinda bitchy though and annoying and strict so He was pissing me off hopefully next year he won't.

Hey Fazio.  I'm glad that you could find what you were looking for on OtakuWanted.com.  Like I said before, I've been a huge fan of Anime Expo's Last Comic Standing since it first came out.

2009 was my favorite, and it was your Pokemon jokes that made it worthwhile.  I look forward to next year and it would be awesome if you were to win in 2010.  G was a great choice for 2009.  I'd like to see him perform next year as well.  I'm assuming he will because they usually keep in touch with the winners.

Sadly, I could not record the whole event.  I'll be prepared next time.

I'm actually in the process of splitting up the video into parts, so that each comic gets their time to shine.  So stay tuned.

Haha, thanks for the encouragement man.  I was surprised by how close it was this year.  Everyone was really REALLY funny!

G's going to be a judge next year.  We're already talking about the "grudge match" arguments we're going to have on stage.  It's gonna be great ;D .  I thought he was amazing.  The fact that he came back and beat Anton (who I thought FOR SURE was going to win) blew my mind.

I actually auditioned for the 2007 competition and didn't make it.  Then I got to the top 10 in 2008.  I decided to change my act, which totally lost it for me (maybe you remember the guy playing the guitar with no jokes?).  It was a great learning experience though.  After that I joined a comedy team in UC Santa Barbara, so by 2009 I was rarin' to go!  I've only been doing stand-up for 3 months, so by next year's con I'll be ready to rock!

So yeah, enough about me.  Thanks again for filming this!  Let me know when you've got each person separated.  I'd love to get a hold of the file too if that's possible.  I'll give you credit and all that, I just want something to put on a DVD.

Building a portfolio is tough :(

Hey Fazio,

When G made a come back I was surprised as well.  I'm thinking they'll give him the opening act next year.  They were supposed to do that with Danny this year but they forgot and put his act at the end, those dumbos.

I do remember you performing last year, I couldn't tell it was you this year because you actually had jokes.  The only thing I remember from you in 2008 was that you "seemed" high during your whole act.

I have separated the video into parts making it easier for people to go to their favorite act.  The video that features you is Part 2 of 7, you can go to the following link:

http://otakuwanted.com/owch_select.php?owchID=5

If you need the video I can hook you up.  I'd greatly appreciate the credit.  Let me know what format you want the video, the video that's online right now is a flash video (.flv).  I can pretty much send you the video in any format.  Let me know what you need to build up your portfolio.

Hell yeah,

What up Fazio? You're the man!  You were fantastic this year at AX 09. I totally remember you from AX 08 in Long Beach. How could I forget... you played your guitar a bit, stripped for the crowd, and threatened to pee in a bottle. LOL.

Your jokes this year were much more solid and left a long lasting impression on me.  I can never look at a spoon the same way. Hahaha.  As good as G was, you still had my vote for #1.

I too thought Anton's victory was certain.  But I gotta hand it to G... his razor wit cut Anton down and was able to take him to the top.

Soap really impressed me this year too, as opposed to AX 08. His "dark" humor had me dying this year, and the way he interacted with the crowd was hilarious.  Definitely one of my favorites of AX 09.

Greg's performance at AX 07 in Anaheim was legendary to me and is the main reason why I continue to make Last Comic Standing a must "go to" event every year.  I tell everyone about it.

Anime Expo's 2009 Last Comic Standing was legendary as well, and all the comics had their moment.  I look forward to Anime Expo 2010... and congratulations to G.

(God I had to be the nerdiest looking dude in that lineup this year. I didn't even intend to wear that outfit but I arrived at the show while wearing my Mike Meekins outfit and I thought that it would have looked too distracting so I removed the police jacket and I put on my glasses so that I could properly see the audience)

Well Fazio I do owe you one, you told me about the AX Backstage interview so I had to respond in kind.

Wow, first off thank you so much for the coverage of Last Comic Standing 2009. My biggest regret was that I didn't have the other performers recorded as I kept stressing to all those who just saw my vids that the 2009 set was just brutal fight for the title. If there was anything I wish you could have recorded it would be the cheering segments. Things got real rowdy that night and it was amazing to see how into the show everyone was. In my honest opinion Fazio got lucky and was seeded in the first round and didn't have to battle the likes of Anton, Afro Samurai and the first champion  ;D Naw I kid, Fazio is a super solid comedian with a unique style that really set him apart from many people, so unique in fact that I can't steal any of his jokes....oh darn, poor me.

Believe me folks, seeing Anton and his guitar made me sweat bullets cause the dude had the total package: stunts, jokes and music works the crowd really ate up his routine and me and all the others that followed him were just shaking in fear. When I performed I was glad I got laughs PERIOD and all I cared about was just giving a good show before dying in a blaze of glory. Hearing the huge ovation the crowd gave Anton made me think that all was lost until I heard my cheers. When it got to the tie breaker I sensed an opportunity for a come back and just fought back with the most brutal yo mamma jokes I could think of.

But yes, this goes without saying that you should watch the show in 2010, Fazio is right about us joking about having a grudge match and I'm sure Anton will want to jump in as this was the first time in the show's history that the winner had to directly face off against two opponents. I'll make sure to make up a good set (I'm super nervous about the thought of me not being able to top my 09 performance as I somehow managed to make every punchline hit home) but really the show will not be about me but more so the crowning of a new winner. I really hope I open the show rather than close it out because at the end everyone is tired from all that cheering and ready to leave. The biggest strength I had this year was that I was a virtual unknown, Masa D. Luffy called me the Darkhorse while Mikado said that watching my rise to victory was like a Rocky movie. I really hate tooting my own horn but I wanted to illustrate that many of the advantages I had in 09 will never be mine again but that's not gonna stop me from getting the laughs.

Right now I'm wondering if I should wear that same outfit again for 2010.

Thanks again otakuwanted for your killer coverage, I'll be back next year making silly side comments and having an opinion that doesn't matter.

Anton really freaked the rest of us out.  His set was solid and INCREDIBLY crowd pleasing.  Though I will say he got to do a much longer routine then the rest of us, and that's not even including his song.  Speaking of which, I actually saw him perform that same song the year before at an open mic in the karaoke room, where he won a prize.  I hope he can beat the song next year, cause now I'm gonna have to play some comedy songs of my own (I also play guitar ;D ).

I really think you deserved it though G.  You were much more in-tune with the otaku culture then I was.  Your Yo Mamma jokes proved that you were a stronger comedian then Anton.  Seriously man, the guy was funny and all, but if he didn't play that song, you would have easily won.

Next year will be epic.  Like I said before, I'm still doing comedy and writing jokes every day.  This year, I had three months experience doing stand up comedy.  Next con I'll have passed the year mark.  I'm doing comedy every day, meeting some pretty big comedians from HBO, Showtime, and Comedy Central.  I definitely recommend doing some open mics G.  It's really gets you in the right mind set.  Trust me, if you can handle bombing at a sleazy downtown bar, you can handle anything :)

You should open the show next year dude.  Two hours is a LONG TIME for people to be laughing.  They just get tired.  Having you open the competition would get everyone in a good mood so us competitors would have a warmed-up audience to perform for.

I can't wait for next year man!!!!

What's up Danny. Not sure if you remember me, I was that dude with the glasses that asked you to sign my book... Thanks again.

Your performance this year was fantastic, although I would have liked to see you open the show rather then end it.  I remember you from AX 08, you were great in the battle round when the topic was First Person Shooters and you mixed it with Pokemon.

I think the audience in 2008 was kinda stiff and did a lot of heckling... I remember you got heckled by some Japanese crowd, they didn't like hearing you say Jap I guess.

Look forward to Anime Expo 2010. Can't wait to see what you'll make us laugh about next.

LOL, I'm happy to hear that.  It would suck if you didn't continue.  I'm a true fan... maybe it's because I'm Mexican.

Your stuff relates to me and my buddies, and during your act there was some Hispanic chick sitting in front of me who you had dying.  I'd say you're like the "George Lopez" of Otaku.

Keep it up man, Hasta Luego.

Yeah Danny!  You gotta compete next year man!

Your set was solid man!  You really are the George Lopez of Anime man.  I wish I saw it live, but they had me and G do some interview thing back stage so we had to miss it.  Thanks for posting it man!

Man, now I'm nervous about next year.  There's gonna be some tough competition man :-[
